One of the important missions of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s ASCEND program is to expose students to SMART (Science, Math, and Related Technologies) initiatives in an effort to close the opportunity gap among African American youth and prepare them for STEM careers that will continue to drive the global economy.

On December 7, 2015, the ASCEND Scholars celebrated Computer Science Education Week by partaking in an Hour of Code, where they created mobile apps. The students were led by Alpha Zeta Omega’s Technology Chairman, Angie Jones, in a workshop using MIT’s App Inventor environment to learn logic and programming skills through block coding. This introduction to programming and mobile app development planted a seed and empowered the students to do more with technology.
